Our Commitment
Breakthrough Cancer Research is committed to ensuring that its website is accessible to as many users as possible, including people with disabilities. We aim to comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. Accessibility and inclusion are central to our mission, and we are continually working to enhance the user experience for all visitors.
Current Status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, due to the issues and limitations listed below.
Accessibility Features
We have implemented the following features to support accessibility:
- Responsive layout and scalable text: content adjusts across screen sizes and devices, improving readability for users with low vision or on mobile devices
- Structured navigation and heading hierarchy: menus and pages use consistent headings to aid screen reader navigation
- Cookie consent panel: compliant with EU regulations and uses keyboard-accessible controls
- Accessible contact details: phone, email, and webform are presented in plain text for screen reader clarity
- Forms with labelled fields: registration and contact forms include proper text labels and programmatic association, supporting assistive technologies
- Semantic HTML usage: implemented across key pages to support assistive technology navigation
Areas for Improvement
We are aware of the following areas that do not yet meet full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance:
- Some text lacks sufficient colour contrast, which may impact readability for users with low vision
- Image links missing alternative (alt) text, making them inaccessible to screen readers
- Some form fields lack text labels or programmatic field purpose, which may confuse assistive technology users
- The main heading (h1) is implemented via a logo image, and some pages are missing (h1) entirely, affecting page structure and recognition by screen readers
- Form control contrast is low, making it hard to distinguish interactive elements
- Some links use identical or unclear text for different destinations, which may reduce clarity and predictability in navigation
- Embedded iframes lack appropriate title attributes, reducing context for screen reader users
- Hero section content repeats when using screen readers, which can cause confusion
- Donation form is not fully accessible via screen reader, affecting form submission flow
- Tab focus indicators are not consistently visible, hindering keyboard navigation awareness
- Some YouTube videos are embedded without captions or transcripts
- Downloadable documents (e.g., PDFs) may not be fully accessible, lacking proper tagging, reading order, or text alternatives
This list is not exhaustive.
We are continuing to audit and review the site to uncover and resolve additional accessibility barriers.
Exemptions
Some older documents and content are not required, by law, to be made accessible (visit European Union (Accessibility of Websites and Mobile Applications of Public Sector Bodies) Regulations 2020 for more information on exemptions).
Planned Improvements
We are committed to improving the accessibility of this website and continue to make updates as part of an ongoing review process. This includes refining content structure, enhancing compatibility with assistive technologies, and addressing any barriers identified through testing and user feedback. Our goal is to ensure a more inclusive and accessible experience for all users over time.
