Running for Laurie: A Mother-Daughter Journey in Support of Breakthrough Cancer Research
I’ve always wanted to take part in the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon, but I wanted to wait until my daughter, Evie, was old enough to run beside me so we could experience it together. This year, we’ll be lacing up our runners, joined by our wonderful friend Lorraine, for a cause that means the world to us: Breakthrough Cancer Research. Choosing to support Breakthrough Cancer Research was an easy decision. Their mission to “Make More Survivors” struck a chord with us. We’re honoured to help raise funds for such vital work.
We’re running in memory of an extraordinary woman, Laurie Milne, who sadly passed from Lung Cancer at aged 50. Laurie was the kind of person who lit up every room she entered. A fiercely loving mum and daughter, she had a smile that could brighten your day and a laugh that was utterly contagious. She was effortlessly funny, beautiful, and endlessly kind. Even after her diagnosis, Laurie lived with an inspiring level of positivity.
She sadly passed within a year of her diagnosis and in this year, she travelled with friends and family, visited Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day and her dad’s birthday just two weeks before she passed, and raised over £10,000 for charity with what she called “Laurie’s Last Big Bash.” She truly never gave up and was the epitome of positivity and inspiration.
Her father and his partner Susie have become family to us here in Ireland. Losing Laurie to cancer at just 50 was devastating, and we want to honour her in the best way we know how: by helping others avoid the heartbreak her family has endured.
We want to honour Laurie’s incredible spirit by raising funds to support people like her who have been affected by cancer. The funds we raise will go toward life-saving research that can offer more time, more hope, and more memories for families like ours. Because in the end, it’s that precious time with the ones we love that matters most.
We’d be so grateful if you could support us, by donating and sharing our story. People are never really gone from our hearts and memories; we want the world to know how deeply loved Laurie was and still is.
